Real differences between oxygen concentrators and medical oxygen tanks in Costa Rica: cost, autonomy, mobility, maintenance, and when to choose each.

Oxygen Concentrator vs Oxygen Tank: Which One to Choose in Costa Rica?

If your doctor prescribed home oxygen therapy, you are likely deciding between renting an oxygen concentrator or renting a medical oxygen tank. Both deliver oxygen, but the difference in cost, autonomy, and patient comfort is huge. This guide explains exactly when to choose each option in Costa Rica.

Quick comparison

| Criteria | Concentrator | Oxygen tank | |---|---|---| | How it works | Filters ambient air | Stores compressed oxygen | | Refills | None required | Yes — every few days | | Autonomy | Continuous (with power) | Limited to tank volume | | Approx. monthly cost | From ₡120,000 | From ₡15,000 (rental) + refills | | Mobility | Stationary or portable (pricier) | Very portable | | Maintenance | Filters + annual service | Valve inspection |

What is an oxygen concentrator?

An oxygen concentrator is an electric device that pulls in ambient air and, through a pressure-swing adsorption process, removes nitrogen — delivering oxygen with up to 95% purity. As long as there is electricity, the concentrator produces oxygen indefinitely — it never "runs out" like a tank.

At Hospital Express we rent 5 LPM concentrators (ideal for basal flows) and 10 LPM concentrators (for higher-demand patients or when two patients share via a splitter). If you need real mobility outside the home, we also offer portable battery-powered concentrators.

What is a medical oxygen tank?

A tank (cylinder) stores compressed medical oxygen at high pressure. When the patient opens the valve, oxygen flows through a regulator to the nasal cannula or mask. No electricity required and very portable, but the volume is finite — once empty, you must refill it at a licensed supplier.

The most common sizes in Costa Rica are:

  • E-type tank (portable): lasts 4 to 8 hours depending on flow. ~3 kg.
  • M60 tank: mid-size with a wheeled cart.
  • H tank (hospital-size): largest, lasts several days at low flow.

When does a concentrator make sense?

Choose a concentrator when:

  1. Patient needs continuous oxygen or many hours per day (more than 8-10 hours).
  2. Will live at home with stable power and short outings.
  3. You want to avoid the cost and logistics of weekly refills.
  4. Use will last several months (post-COVID, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis).

Long term, the concentrator is usually cheaper: once you pay the monthly rent, oxygen is "free" as long as you have electricity. Tank refills are paid per fill and quickly add up to more than a concentrator's rent.

When does a tank make sense?

Choose an oxygen tank when:

  1. You only need oxygen a few hours a day (sleep supplementation, episodic exertion).
  2. The patient often leaves home and needs a lightweight portable system.
  3. You live in an area with frequent power outages and need backup.
  4. Use will be short term (a few post-op days).

We also recommend having at least one E-type tank as emergency backup for any patient on a concentrator, to cover blackouts.

Ideal setup: concentrator + portable tank

Most of our patients in Costa Rica use a combination: a concentrator at home for continuous use and an E tank for medical visits, outings, or emergencies. It is the most comfortable setup and, in total cost, still cheaper than living on tanks alone.

FAQ

Can I fly with a concentrator? Yes, but only FAA-approved portable concentrators. Stationary units are not allowed in cabin.

What if the power goes out? That is why we recommend a backup tank. Some concentrators have a short internal battery. For areas with frequent outages, plan for a small generator or dedicated UPS.

Is VAT included? Yes, all prices include Costa Rica VAT.

Do you handle same-day emergencies? Yes. If the patient is being discharged today and needs oxygen, message WhatsApp 8777-7361 and we coordinate delivery in under 4 hours in the GAM (subject to stock).
