How Much Does an Oxygen Tank Cost in Costa Rica? Prices & Refills 2026
If you need medical oxygen at home, one of the first questions is how much an oxygen tank costs in Costa Rica and how much you will spend on refills. Below you will find real market prices, a comparison between the main sizes, and tips to avoid overpaying.
Tank rental prices (reference)
| Size | Capacity | Monthly rent | Refill | |---|---|---|---| | E-type (portable) | ~680 L | from ₡15,000 | ₡8,000 - ₡12,000 | | M60 (mid-size) | ~1,700 L | from ₡25,000 | ₡15,000 - ₡20,000 | | H (hospital) | ~7,000 L | from ₡40,000 | ₡35,000 - ₡50,000 |
Prices include Costa Rica VAT and are 2026 market reference. Final quote depends on the supplier, location, and rental term.
How long does a tank last?
Duration depends on the prescribed flow (LPM) and tank size. This table approximates hours of continuous flow:
| Flow | E-type | M60 | H | |---|---|---|---| | 1 LPM | ~11 h | ~28 h | ~117 h | | 2 LPM | ~5 h 30 m | ~14 h | ~58 h | | 3 LPM | ~3 h 45 m | ~9 h 30 m | ~39 h | | 5 LPM | ~2 h 15 m | ~5 h 40 m | ~23 h |
If the patient uses oxygen 24/7 at 2 LPM, an E-type tank lasts about half a day. At those volumes renting an oxygen concentrator is usually much cheaper (see our full guide).
Monthly oxygen cost
Real case: patient uses 2 LPM 24 hours a day.
- E-type tanks only: ~5 refills per day × 30 days = ₡40,000 to ₡60,000 per day in refills. Not viable.
- H tank + refills: ~12 refills/month × ₡35,000 = ₡420,000/month + rental.
- 5L concentrator: ₡120,000 - ₡180,000/month, no hour limit.
For continuous use at > 1 LPM, the concentrator is by far the cheaper option. Tanks are ideal for occasional use, outings, or backup.

Safety recommendations
- Do not smoke near oxygen — it is an oxidizer.
- Keep the tank vertical and secured in its cart or base.
- Keep the tank away from heat sources (stoves, heaters).
- Close the valve when not in use, even if the regulator looks closed.
- Never grease the valve or fittings; use only soap and water to clean.
Buy or rent the tank?
Buy an E-type tank: ₡180,000 - ₡250,000 new. Worth it if you will use it for more than 12 months as backup.
Rent: ₡15,000/month. Good for temporary use, post-op, or when you do not want to deal with valve maintenance.
